Essential gear
The extreme temperatures and remote nature of the trail necessitate high-quality, winter-rated camping gear (including appropriate liquid fuel stoves) and a reliable two-way emergency communication device at the very least. All gear (including ski or snowshoe gear) should be well maintained and tested before the expedition as a failure can quickly lead to a life-threatening situation. Additionally, tools and materials to repair critical equipment should be carried to ensure you’re prepared for any unexpected issues. Glacier goggles are crucial to prevent snow blindness.
We emphasize that you cannot count on being able to sleep in the huts. There simply may not be space, and there is no certainty that you will always be able to reach a hut. A 4-season tent with adequate tools to anchor it in snow, lake ice and permafrost is essential.
Carrying too much gear can slow you down and increase fatigue, while carrying too little can leave you unprepared. Your gear needs to be balanced and efficiently organized (e.g. polar bedding bag) to allow quick access to essential items. It is too cold to be searching for items.
