Where to buy supplies

Where to buy supplies

Greenland’s isolation and arctic climate means that almost everything must be shipped in from abroad. This means that you can’t just pop to the shops as you do in other countries for last minute purchases.

That said, we do strongly encourage you to support local businesses for your food supplies, rather than bringing everything into the country.

Hiking/camping equipment and clothing

There are very limited options for specialist equipment available within Greenland. This includes lightweight hiking and camping gear, so you should arrive with all the equipment and clothing you will need for the hike. At the very least, make sure you have everything not listed in the Optional section of our ACT Gear Checklist.

Fuel for stoves

Many hikers prefer the convenience of gas canister (compressed fuel) stoves due to their ease of use, compact nature, and lighter weight. You can buy this type of fuel in both Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut. Keep in mind that there are two types of canisters – ones with a clip in connection, and one with a screw-in connection. Make sure you buy the correct one for your stove! 9 days is a long time to be cold soaking.

The following stores usually have gas cannisters for sale:

Kangerlussuaq
  • Pilersuisoq supermarket (opening hours)
  • Kang Mini Market
  • Ishuset
  • Albatros Arctic Circle – ask at reception at Polar Lodge or Old Camp
Sisimiut
  • Sisimiut Sport
  • Sisimiut Outdoor
  • Stark
  • Sirius
  • Spar Piniutit
  • Petrol station shop near harbour
  • Hotel Sisimiut

Of course, if you have a multi-fuel stove, then you have even more options once you arrive in Kangerlussuaq or Sisimiut. Pilersuisoq in Kangerlussuaq usually has some form of white fuel / ethanol (sprit in Danish) for sale, and you can usually find it in several of the stores in Sisimiut. In a pinch, visit the gas station for diesel or unleaded car fuel.

Food

How much food you bring with you to Greenland will depend on what you want to eat on the trail, how much you eat, and how long you will be hiking.

You can buy staple foodstuffs like fruit, bread, crackers, cheese, processed meats, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, muesli bars, grains, cereals, oats, pasta, sugar, tea, and coffee at both ends of the trail.

Kangerlussuaq
Sisimiut
  • Brugseni (open 7am – 9pm)
  • Pisiffik  (open 7am – 9pm)
  • Akiki (open 7am – midnight)
  • Spar (open 7am – 11pm)

There is a new regulation that animal products cannot be bought into the EU (and hence Greenland) from outside the EU. This includes dried trekking meals that contain meat. If this is what you plan to eat on the trail, we encourage you to support local communities and arrange to purchase them in Greenland.

Both towns usually have a selection of dried hiking meals, however Kangerlussuaq is more likely to have run out and offer only a handful of options.

To be absolutely certain of your supply, you can pre-order from Sisimiut Outdoor, who can also arrange for it to be delivered and waiting for you in Kangerlussuaq.

Order online and select Pick up in Kangerlussuaq in the shipping.

You must order 1 week in advance.
