Dealing with Arctic winter cold

Dealing with Arctic winter cold

Given the extremely low temperatures you will likely encounter on the trail, it is critical that you understand what clothing is appropriate, how to layer your clothing, how to protect your extremities (including your nose!), and how to manage sweat and body temperature. Failure to do so may result in frostbite or hypothermia – both of which can be lethal.

Temperature management

While staying warm is crucial, it’s equally important not to overheat to the point where your clothing becomes damp from sweat. Damp clothing can cause rapid cooling when your activity level decreases or when you’re resting, so staying dry is essential for conserving energy and maintaining warmth. You must find a balance, and not be lazy in adding and removing layers.
