PLB hire

All hikers should carry an emergency device of some description on the Arctic Circle Trail. Many people opt for a Garmin InReach device, though other brands of beacons or a satellite phone are also possible.

We strongly encourage you to choose one with two-way communication. This is to help our own emergency services as Greenland has limited capacity for Search & Rescue missions. You can find information about how the Greenland Rescue Services work at that link.

In 2024, we have several very simple to use Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) available for hire at Destination Arctic Circle.

If you would like to hire one of our PLBs, please complete the form below and make your payment at least 1 month in advance of hiking the trail.

This will give us enough time to make sure a PLB is waiting for you at your start point.

PLBs are allocated on a first-in-first served basis so we encourage you to book as soon as you know your dates.

How to use our PLBs in an emergency

Do not remove the top cover unless you have an emergency.

If you are in need:

  1. Remove the top cover
  2. Unwrap the aerial and try to keep it as vertical as possible
  3. Press the ON button
  4. Stay where you are as the device has sent your location to the emergency services

Note: once activated, you are responsible for any and all costs associated with your rescue. Please by very careful not to activate it by accident!

Book your PLB

If you wish to book a PLB through us, please email us at act@acb.gl with the following information:

  • Full Name
  • Email Address
  • Phone number
  • Where you will start the ACT and your accommodation there
  • What date you want to pick up the PLB (please use format: 02 Jul 2022)
  • Where you will end the ACT and your accommodation there
  • What date you want to return the PLB (please use format: 02 Jul 2022)

PLB Hire costs 550DKK and is for a maximum of 14 days.

Once we receive your email, we will send you an email verifying the availability of a PLB as well as payment instructions. Payment can be via Paypal or bank transfer. We will confirm your PLB once we receive your payment.

PLBs must be picked up / dropped off at the following locations:

Kangerlussuaq: Hotel Kangerlussuaq

Sisimiut: Hotel SØMA (7am – 22pm)

It is your responsibility to hand in your PLB at the specified place on the date you specified.
